The material selection of centrifugal pumps should be based on the characteristics of the conveying medium. For clean water or weakly corrosive liquids, cast iron or ductile iron is an economical and practical choice with high strength and low cost. However, when conveying highly corrosive media such as acids and alkalis, stainless steel (such as 304 or 316L) becomes the first choice. 316L stainless steel contains molybdenum, which can significantly improve its resistance to chloride corrosion and is suitable for marine environments or high-salinity scenarios. For extremely corrosive media, such as strong acids or organic solvents, special materials such as fluoroplastic (such as PTFE) lined pumps or Hastelloy alloys should be considered to ensure long-term stable operation.

In addition to chemical compatibility, the material must also meet mechanical performance requirements. Under high head or high pressure conditions, the pump body needs to have sufficient compressive strength. At this time, duplex stainless steel or super stainless steel may be a better solution. In addition, in food-grade or pharmaceutical-grade applications, the material must comply with FDA or GMP certification standards to avoid contamination risks. For example, 316L stainless steel has become the first choice in such industries due to its smooth surface and easy-to-clean characteristics.

Economic efficiency and sustainability are also important factors in material decision-making. Although special alloys or plastic materials have higher initial costs, their corrosion resistance can greatly extend the service life of the pump, reduce maintenance and replacement frequency, and thus reduce long-term operating costs. In addition, the application of some recyclable materials is also in line with environmental protection trends, helping companies achieve green production goals.

In short, the material selection of centrifugal pumps needs to be comprehensive of medium characteristics, operating conditions and industry specifications, balancing performance, cost and sustainability. Correct material selection can not only improve equipment reliability, but also create higher economic benefits and environmental value for enterprises.
